Two million children are reported in advices from Charkov to be facing the danger of famine. The situation while universally bad, is particularly acute in the sixteen southern “Ocyezds” or provinces. Reports are also to the effect that 300,000 children are receiving aid in various forms. Of these 80,000 are cared for in homes. It is estimated that 40,000 children are living in railway stations, sleeping on the streets and occupying ruins of houses. The number of starving in the province and city of Cherson has increased to 127,000 within the last few weeks. Add to the immediate danger of starvation the poor prospects for the future, and the picture of Ukraine misery is complete.
Only 10% of land available for agriculture had been planted, and accordingly the crops even if successful cannot yield more than 10% of the population’s needs. Unemployment is on the increase and the present winter is a terribly severe one.
