Never in the history of Germany has the peril of pogroms hung over the heads of the Jewish population as it does now. Jewish bloodshed may be expected any day in Bavaria. The country swarms with uniformed and armed Hakenkreuzler who are openly fraternizing with the army and police. In the event of trouble the police and military powers would probably side with the trouble makers.
The press is exclusively anti-Semitic, all Socialist and liberal newspapers having been suppressed.
Serious disorders have occurred not only in Nuernberg, where four Jews were fatally wounded, but at Kissingen, Bamberg, Kronach and right here in Munich.
In their anti-Jewish campaign Hitlerists are making use of extremist measures in fanning the anti-Jewish flame with the aid of the notorious ritual murder libel. At the Hitler headquarters a picture of Jews in the act of committing ritual murder upon a naked Christian girl is displayed and Fascisti leaders declare they are prepared to prove the Jewish practice of ritual murder.
Those who looked for improvement in the situation in consequence of the reported enstrangement between Dictator von Kahr and Hitler are doomed to disappointment. Von Kahr has declared there are no differences between him and the Fascisti leader as both are pursuing the same aim through different methods.
The police statements that the expulsions are not limited exclusively to Jews notwithstanding, there has been only one non-Jew ordered deported, a Czecho-Slovak citizen named Czihak. The order for his deportation has been withdrawn, however.
Searches of Jewish homes continue, the finding of a few suits of clothes or some pieces of Jewelry being enough to brand the owner as a profiteer. There is a case on record of one who was found to possess some Austrian kronen, two American dollars and a German loan certificate, the total value of which was less than ten pounds. He has been expelled as a currency hoarder. The formula for deportation is supposed to apply to those who settled in Bavaria and enriched themselves at the expense of the population thereby becoming economically undesirable. The police interpretation put upon this formula has been made to apply in the case of a cigarette manufacturer, Bernhard Ass, who within twenty years built up a large plant employing hundreds of workers. “Economically undesirable” also is Isador Fett, the creator of the film industry employing thousands of persons.
