Two thousand seven hundred and eighty immigrants entered Palestine during the month of December, according to figures made known here today.
NO UNEMPLOYMENT IN PALESTINE, DELEGATION OF LABOR LEADERS DECLARES
That there is no unemployment in Palestine now, was the statement made by a delegation of Palestine Jewish workers who arrived in New York yesterday on the Majestic. The delegation, which represents the Histadruth Ha’ovdim, the central organization of Palestine Jewish workers’ unions, is composed of the three Palestine labor leaders, I. Ben-Zwi, David Remez and I. Baratz.
“The talk about unemployment in Palestine arises out of the fear that there will be unemployment in the country if certain measures are not taken,” the delegation declared to a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “Unemployment is feared, first because of the change in the character of the immigrants who entered the country recently. Those entering now are eager to become laborers and not traders. Secondly, because we now have a list of 7,000 Jewish workers in Poland and other countries, who have already received certificates to emigrate to Palestine. Measures must be taken to provide work for them.
“The central organization of the Palestine Jewish workers’ unions is now considering measures to prevent unemployment in the country. We have sufficient workers’ institutions through which unemployment can be prevented,” they stated. “We have the cooperatives, the Workers’ Bank, the ‘Solel Boine’ contracting agency and many others. However, we need help from our fellow workers in America in order to carry on these institutions and to extend our activities. For this reason we have come here, having been invited by the United Hebrew Trades in America, which will launch on Sunday their quarter of a million dollar campaign to aid our institutions in Palestine.
The delegation was met at the pier by representatives of many New York Jewish workers’ organizations.
