Vera Menchik, a Russian Jewish girl, is one of the leading members of the English team of the International Chess Tournament, which opened here yesterday.

Miss Menchik, who is 21 years old, is one of the Russian Jewish refugees who settled in England 4 years ago.

RABBIS ISSUE APPEAL FOR PALESTINE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

The Union of Orthodox Rabbis in the United States and Canada, it was learned yesterday, has decided to issue an appeal to the American Jewish public to send contributions for Palestine Jewish families and institutions who have suffered as a result of the earthquake.

The rabbis urge in their appeal that every Jewish family donate not less than half a dollar as pidiom nephesh (deliverance tax).
