The Hebrew schools in Poland maintained by the Tarbuth organization function under an annual deficit of 40%, it was pointed out in connection with the discussions in the Budget Commission on the government allotments for Jewish cultural institutions. The government allotment for the Tarbuth system amounts to 16,000 Zlotys annually.
Teachers in the schools receive only eight months’ salary for the year’s work because of the lack of funds. The Tarbuth is unable to compete with the government free schools, where 300,000 Jewish pupils are educated.
In the Tarbuth system there are 78 kindergartens, 149 public schools, 13 high schools and 5 teachers seminaries. The total number of pupils is 24660, with 991 teachers.
