Seventy-four Yeshivas, Talmudic academies, with an enrollment of 9,185 students, in Congress Poland, Wohlynia and Polish Lithuania are threatened with liquidation, American support having been discontinued since January 1.
An appeal to rescue these institutions was made by the Warsaw Rabbinate in conjunction with Rabbis in other parts of the country, in a statement made at a Jewish press conference today. It was explained that until January 1, the American Jewish Central Relief Committee, through the Joint Distribution Committee, covered one-fourth of the budget of these institutions. Due to the withdrawal of this support, the unusual cold and the general crisis in the country, the local support for the Yeshivas has dropped to its lowest point. The students literally face starvation.
At a national convention of rabbis in session here, in the presence of five hundred from various parts of the country, the matter received thorough consideration. An appeal was issued to Jews throughout the world to rally to the rescue of the Polish Yeshivas “the tents of the Torah.”
