New efforts to bring about a political reconciliation between the various factions of Roumanian Jewry so that its representatives may present a united front in relation to the government, have now been undertaken.
Negotiations are under way between the nationalists and the unionists for bringing about an agreement. The principal purpose is to unite the Club of Jewish Deputies, consisting mainly of Zionists, and the Union of Roumanian Jews, of which Dr. William Filderman is president. The points on which an agreement is sought are the following: First, that Roumanian Jewry be recognized as a national minority in the country. The vice-president of the Bucharest Kehillah, Dr. Steinhardt, was again received by Prime Minister Maniu and the government members, Madgearu and Vlad, concerning the Bucharest Kehillah affair. He insisted that the Ministry of Religions suspend the control commission it appointed and demanded that the government orders elections of Kehillah councils in other communities where the Kehillah affairs have been placed in the hands of government commissioners. The government members, it is reported, gave no definite replies to this demand. In the meantime, however, the Regency Council has intervened with the Ministry of Religions in favor of the Jewish position.
