An illustrated lecture by the prominent orientalist, Professor M. Krauss, of excavated old Palestine synagogues which are said to prove the existence of a Jewish culture in Palestine long after the downfall of the Jewish State, aroused great interest at the International Congress of Orientalists meeting here. Today was Jewish Day and the discussion centered around the Old Testament, the results of the excavations in Palestine and Jewish culture in the Hellenistic period with particular reference to the work of the late Dr. Solomon Schechter.
With only a few Jewish scientists from the Austrian and German universities in attendance and the majority of the orientalists present Christians, Jewish circles here were inclined to criticize the Vienna congress administration for allotting addresses to but a few Jewish scientists, and even overlooking internationally known Semitologists.
Nevertheless the Jews present expressed admiration for the idealism of the Christian scientists and for their immense knowledge of Judaica. Among those present was Professor S. Wolfenson of the University of Cairo, a noted Arabic authority.
