Charles Schwed, Somerville Merchant, Dead at Eighty

Charles Schwed, pioneer Jewish merchant of this city, died yesterday at the age of eighty. Mr. Schwed, who was born in Germany, came to America in 1866 and in 1871 established the firm of C. Schwed & Co. here, a dry goods establishment with branches in Plainfield and Elizabeth. At the time of his death he was vice-president of the Second National Bank of Somerville and a director of the Citizens Building and Loan Association. He also took an active part in polities as a Democrat, and was a member of the old Board of Commissions and of the Board of Education of Somerville.
