Occurrences such as the anti-Jewish disturbances in Balaceana and Suceava should never be repeated, King Carol told a deputation of peasants from Bukowina who waited upon him at Sinaia to complain of the difficult times and their great hardships. The delegation was comprised of five peasants from Suceava who sought the King’s aid in reducing the interest that moneylenders charge, in the enforcement of the law against usurers, the reduction of taxes and the distribution among the peasants of forest lands now held by religious funds.
While the King promised to use his influence to ease the position of the peasants he not only appealed to them to increase their output and reduce their expenditures but told them that they were a disgrace to the district and reproached them for having created trouble for the country.
