Lehman Inaugurated As New York’s First Jewish Governor in Two Simple Services

Herbert H. Lehman was sworn in as the first Jewish Governor of the State of New York in two ceremonies, the first of which took place Saturday evening in New York, in the presence of a small group of friends and relatives and the second yesterday, a public ceremony attended by 2000 persons.

The oath of office as the Chief Executive of New York State was administered to Governor Lehman on Saturday evening in his New York home by his brother Judge Irving Lehman of the New York State Court of Appeals. A shadow was cast over the ceremony by the sudden death of the Governor’s sister, Mrs. Clara L. Limburg on Friday.

Owing to Mrs. Limburg’s death all social events in connection with the inaugural were cancelled. Colonel Lehman was in Albany conferring with President elect Roosevelt when informed of his sister’s passing. He left at once for New York.

Yesterday’s inaugural ceremonies were held according to schedule at noon and were the simplest in the history of the State. The oath of office was administered by Secretary of State Edward J. Flynn with President-elect Roosevelt, the retiring Governor and former Governor Alfred E. Smith in attendance.

The reception and inaugural luncheon scheduled to be held yesterday at the Executive Mansion were cancelled.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at Temple Emanu-el for Mrs. Clara L. Limburg, a sister of Governor-elect Herbert H. Lehman.

The death of Mrs. Limburg occurred in Mount Sinai hospital and resulted in a cancellation of many of the social arrangements for the inauguration of her brother as the first Jewish Governor of the State of New York.

Mrs. Limburg was sixty-two years old.

Rabbi H. G. Enelow officiated at the services. Interment took place at Salem Fields Cemetery. Mrs. Limburg was the widow of Richard Limburg. Mrs. Limburg was active in a number of philanthropic activities.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Max Rossbach, and two sons Richard P. Limburg and Allan M. Limburg, and by three brothers, Governor Lehman, Arthur Lehman and Judge Irving Lehman.
