High Holy days in Palestine were celebrated here amid scenes of intense spiritual fervor and pious devotion. Synagogues and other places of worship were packed. Among the worshippers were a considerable number of German immigrants.
At the Western Wall (the Wailing Wall) there were thousands of visitors who came to pray. Included in the number were members of Bethar (Brith Trumpeldor Revisionist) groups who arrived from abroad. District administration officers were present at the Wall to preserve order.
It is estimated that about 10,000 persons swelled the capital’s floating population over the holidays. Omnibuses and trains were packed to capacity. A special service was established between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to meet traffic demands.
In Tel Aviv the streets and large thoroughfares were thronged with pedestrians. Vehicular traffic was completely absent. At the Congregation Ohel-Shem services were conducted by Cantor Z. Kwartzin. At the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street Cantor Rabitz conducted services. At services held in the Opera Moghrabi, Cantor Kawatsky, of the United States, officiated.
