Rabbis in Brockton have joined with other religious communions here in an attempt to alleviate the distress caused by the present difficulties in the shoe industry. Rabbi Irving M. Levey of Temple Israel and Rabbi Harry G. Borvick of Congregation Israel are members of the committee which attempted to get all parties in the controversy together to settle the matter.
This is the fifth week of the shoe strike here and about 1,000 Jewish workers are out, together with 7,000 other workers. The Jewish community was the first to take steps toward the relief of the strikers and their action was closely followed by the Brotherhood of Shoe and Allied Craftsmen.
Brockton has welcomed its newest Jewish spiritual leader, Rabbi Irving M. Levey of Cleveland, Ohio, who succeeds Rabbi David Goldberg, who resigned to devote his time to travel and study. The new rabbi comes here from the Euclid Avenue Temple in Cleveland and led the holiday services of his congregation, held at the Y.M.-Y.W.H.A. here to accommodate the capacity congregations
With the beginning of the Jewish New Year, the Jewish community centre also began its social and athletic season. Henry Smolensky, well known athlete in this section, has been named coach of the Y.M.H.A. basketball team.
