The American Jewish Congress is without power to change the date of elections for the World Jewish Congress or to plostpone its convocation, according to a statement issued yesterday by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president, and Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the organization. The organization, however, will recommedd postponement of the world congress to the world congress executive committee.

The statement, embodying the views of teh American Jewish Congress administrative committee, expressed at a meeting Sunday of the national executive committee of the Zionist Organization of America, points out that preparations for the world congress are to continue. The Zionist organization called for postponement of elections.

IT TAKES COGNIZANCE

“The administrative committee of the American Jewish Congress takes cognizance of the resolutions adopted by the national executive committee of the Zionist organization, reaffirming the necessity of convening a World Jewish Congress which shall deal with teh most critical problems of the Jewish people throughout the world, but calling for the postponement of elections to the World Jewish Congress in order that preparetions thereto may be more thoroughly made,” according to the statement.

“The American Jewish Congress has no authority to determine or to alter the date for the elections and cannot take responsibility for potponing them. In respect to matters affecting the World Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Congress is simply representative of the World Jewish Conference which has issued the call for the congress and is organizing the elections throughout the world.

IT WILL RECOMMEND

“The American Jewish Congress, however, will recommend to the executive committee of the World Jewish Conference to accede to the request of the national executive committee of the Zionist Organization of America andto postpone teh date for the convening of the World Jewish Congress to some other time.

“Decision taken as to the date of the elections by the World Jewish Congress executive does not modify the obligation of the American Jewish Congress to continue the work of preparing for teh World Jewish Congress. The Aerican Jewish Congress cannot postpine for a single moment discharging the responisbility imposed upon it by the world Jewish Conference. The American Jewish Congress goes on with this work in the faith of the full support of all the Jews in America.

INVITATION TO COOPERATE

“In connection with this work, the American Jewish Congress continues to look to the active support of all Zionists and non-Zionists of America who believe in the necessityh of the World Jewish Congress.

“The American Jewish Congress continues to invite each and every Jewish group and individual, regardless of sect or party, to coperate in the democratic and efficient organization of Jewry for the defense of their rihgts as Jews and as citizens to civilization and democracy.

“The World Jewish Congress Committee is directed to go on with its work of preparation.”
