Chief Rabbis Kook and Meir, who have been taking the lead in the worldwide appeal in behalf of Abraham Stavsky, now under sentence of death in the Arlosoroff murder case, were warned today that their appeal involves contempt of court “with all its consequences.”
The warning was given them today by the Jerusalem District Commissioner, J. E. F. Campbell, who invited the two rabbis to a conference.
Dr. Kook explained to the British official that he had no intention of offending the judges who had sentenced Stavsky, but that the Jewish law states that wherever the life of an innocent Jew is involved, not only a court deision but also the Jewish religion is superseded.
It is understood that the district commissioner asked the rabbis for a written explanation.
