“Anti-Semitism is anti-American because hatred of a minority group of a different religious faith tramples down the very concepts of religious freedom upon which this republic of ours was founded,” declared Richard E. Gutstadt, director of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Committee at the seventy-first convention of B’nai B’rith District Grand Lodge No. 4, which closed here yesterday.
Rabbi William M. Stern, reform leader, denounced “Jewish ‘hitchhikers’ who want free rides on the vehicle of Jewish life and who say, ‘Let other people meet the problems of Jewish education, build harmony and establish a constructive Jewish life.'”
Officers elected at the convention were: David Blumberg, grand president; P. Allen Rickles, first vice-president; Harry K. Wolfe, treasurer, and Edward A. Zeisler, San Francisco, executive secretary.
Officers of the Women’s Grand Lodge are: Mrs. Amelia Ravinsky, president; Mrs. Beatrice Peal, councillor; Mrs. Bessie Schwab, first vice-president; Mrs. Golden Speyer, second vice-president; Mrs. Celia Lessman, treasurer, and Mrs. Ray Rolland, executive secretary.
