A six-hour strike of tradesmen and merchants was carried out here today in protest against proposed increases in rents.
Promptly at noon, all stores were closed and factories stopped their work, responding to a call of the Jerusalem Merchants Association, the Jerusalem Artisans Association, the Barbers Union and the Laundry and Dry Cleaners Association. The strike passed quietly and work was resumed in some stores at six o’clock.
GOVERNMENT WARNED
Prior to proclaiming the strike, meetings were held by shopkeepers who are tenants and a warning was given to the government and to the municipality urging the enactment of a law restricting rentals. The municipal council decided not to sponsor enactment of such restrictions.
