The United Palestine Appeal drive was opened here in the presence of the Premier of Ontario, Mitchell F. Hepburn. Before 500 guests at a banquet in the King Edward Hotel last night, the Premier assured “unlimited equality” to the Jews of the province.
Also seated on the dais at the banquet which opened the drive for $30,000 were Dr. A. L. Sachar of the University of Illinois, national director of B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations; David Croll, Minister of Public Welfare; Paul Leduc, Minister of Mines, and A. J. Freiman, president of the Zionist Organization of Canada.
Over $12,000 was collected at the banquet after an address by Mr. Freiman which he concluded with the announcement of a personal contribution of $1,000.
RABBI J.B. WISE TO SPEAK AT RALEIGH PARLEY TODAY
Rabbi Jonah B. Wise will be the principal speaker at the North Carolina State Conference of the United Jewish Appeal today at the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel in Raleigh, it was announced at Appeal headquarters here yesterday. The conference has been called to organize North Carolina for participation in the national campaign of the United Jewish Appeal for the relief and rehabilitation of the Jews of Germany and other lands and the settlement of Jews in Palestine.
State chairmanship of North Carolina’s campaign has been accepted by Julius W. Cone of ##ensboro, with Rabbi Frederick I. Rypins, also of Greensboro, as secretary.
Raleigh is the first community in the State to be organized and is led by Albert Zand, chairman.
BENTWICH ARRIVES TO AID APPEAL CAMPAIGN HERE
Norman Bentwich, professor of international relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, former attorney-general of Palestine, and now associated with James G. McDonald on the League of Nations Commission for Refugees from Germany, arrived here yesterday on the Statendam.
He came with Mrs. Bentwich for a tour of the United States in the interests of the United Jewish Appeal.
“We plan to take the story of Palestine throughout America, not only to the Jew but to the Christian as well,” he said on his arrival.
Shortly after debarking, Prof. Bentwich attended a luncheon given by the United Jewish Appeal at the Henry Street Settlement.
