Jose Iturbi will appear in the dual role of pianist and conductor at the Lewisohn Stadium tonight (Sunday) in the Grieg Concerto. He will also play a group of piano solos by Spanish composers: Albehiz’s “Sevillana No. 3. Granados’ “Goyescas” No. 4 and the “Ritual Dance of Fire” from De Falla’s “El Amor Brujo.”
The program will open with the “Peer Gynt” suite by Grieg and close with the Cesar Franck symphony. In the event of rain, an orchestral program will be given in the Great Hall and this program played the following Sunday.
Tomorrow and Tuesday night Michel Fokine will present the third of his ballet programs, consisting of “Cleopatra,” to music by Arensky, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Glazounoff. Taneieff and Moussorgsky; “Les Sylphides,” to music by Chopin and a comedy ballet and “Russian Toys,” to music by Rimsky-Korsakoff.
Alexander Smallens will conduct the orchestra for the ballet numbers and also for two orchestral numbers. Moussorsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and Rimsky-Korsakoff’s “Russian Easter” overture.
DANCERS LISTED
Winona Mimboni, Paul Haakon, Edna Veralle, Betty Eisner and George Church will dance the title roles in “Cleopatra.”
Wednesday evening Mr. Iturbi will introduce LeRoy Anspach as soloist in the Liszt Piano Concert in E Flat. Mr. Anspach, a young Philadelphia musician, will make his debut in Town Hall next October. The program will also include Liszt’s “Les Preludes,” the Berceuse from Stravinsky’s “Fire Bird Suite.” and the “Petrouchka” suite, the latter being played for the first time in New York in its corrected form.
Thursday and Friday the opera “Boheme” will be performed with Mr. Smallens conducting the orchestra. Nina Morgana and Edward Molitore will sing the title roles.
Saturday night Mr. Iturbi will give the first New York performance of Robert Russell Bennett’s “Adagio Eroica to the Memory of a Soldier.” Braham’s “Third Symphony” and Debussy’s “La Mer” will also be played.
