During the World War, Velvel Schwartz was one of the first to join the Jewish Legion in Palestine. Officers of his regiment knew him as the young American who threatened to foment a mutiny in the banks every time he got the idea the “boys” wern’t being treated right.
Two years ago, Schwartz died of heart-failure. At noon today (Sunday) the Poale Zion-Zeire Zion organization and the Jewish National Workers Alliance will unveil a monument over his grave in the Montefiore Cemtery.
Schwartz, who was 42 when he died, was a leading labor Zionist. He was unique in that he never held an office in the movement to which he devoted his life, except to serve in the Poale Zion executive, and he never made a public speech.
Buses will leave for the cemetery at 10 o’clock in the morning from the Poale Zion office, 1225 Broadway.
