Declaring that the Balfour Declaration has not proven entirely satisfactory, Col. Josiah Wedgwood has a long letter printed in Near East and India in reply to a recent letter in that publication by Albert M. Hyamson objecting to Col. Wedgwood’s plan to convert Palestine into a crown colony.
Taking sharp issue with Mr. Hyamson’s statement that the Jews and fifty League of Nations members would object because the Balfour Declaration is embodied in the mandate, Col. Wedgwood says:
“I imagine that the Jews would be better satisfied with a new pledge and a democratic constitution and self-government would be granted as soon as both Jews and Arabs asked for it. As for the fifty nations to be ‘squared,’ a good many fragments of the peace treaties are back in the melting pot just now and something for England too does not seem unreasonable to hope for. But, seriously, does Mr. Hyamson suppose that France with Syria, and Italy with Abyssinia, and both wanting our help as never before, are likely to object to our changing the name of our protection over a somewhat troublesome Province and problem? We do not have to consult Germany.”
