THE PERMANENT MANDATES COMMISSION OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS, STUDYING PETITIONS SUBMITTED BY ARABS AND JEWS IN CONNECTION WITH ITS EXAMINATION OF THE PALESTINE QUESTION, WAS REPORTED TODAY PARTICULARLY IMPRESSED WITH MEMORANDA SUBMITTED BY THE AGUDATH ISRAEL (ORTHODOX JEWISH ORGANIZATION) AND THE NEW ZIONIST ORGANIZATION AS REVEALING LACK OF UNITY AMONG THE JEWS WHICH MIGHT CHALLENGE THE RIGHT OF THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE TO SPEAK IN THE NAME OF ALL THE JEWS.

AN ARAB DELEGATION HERE WAS BELIEVED CONVINCED THAT THE PALESTINE MANDATE WOULD BE CONTINUED DESPITE THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S ASSERTIONS THAT IT WAS UNWORKABLE, AND THAT A LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL WOULD BE ESTABLISHED IN THE HOLY LAND.

SOME ARAB LEADERS APPEARED DISPOSED TO MAKE PEACE WITH THE JEWS ON THE BASIS OF POLITICAL PARITY BETWEEN THE TWO POPULATIONS AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, APPARENTLY HOPING THAT THROUGH THE COUNCIL THEY MIGHT OBTAIN RESTRICTION OF JEWISH IMMIGRATION.

THE MANDATES COMMISSION, IT WAS LEARNED, HAS REQUESTED STENOGRAPHIC RECORDS OF THE EVIDENCE TAKEN BY THE BRITISH ROYAL COMMISSION ON PALESTINE.

AUGUST 20 HAS BEEN FIXED AS THE ULTIMATE DATE FOR COMPLETION OF THE TASK WHICH THE MANDATES COMMISSION SET ITSELF, WHICH INCLUDED EXAMINATION OF THE MANDATORY’S 1935 AND 1936 REPORTS ON PALESTINE. THE HEARINGS MUST BE CONCLUDED BY THAT DATE IN ORDER TO GIVE THE COMMISSION TIME TO PREPARE ITS REPORT TO THE LEAGUE COUNCIL, WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO MEET SEPT. 3.
