For the first time since Hungary joined the Axispowers, a Jew, Ernat Kiss, has been sentenced to death by a military court in Budapest this week, according to reliable information reaching here today. The victim, aged 33, was charged with “pro-Allied activities.” His wife was sentenced to five years imprisonment on the same charge. Stefan Fischer, a friend, was given eight years at hard labor in an internment’ camp.
A report from Budapest today stated that in retaliation for their protesting against the introduction of the anti-Jewish laws into Hungary, all Socialist members of the Budapest City Council were barred for a week from sessions of the Council and fined 500 pengoes each. The Socialist councillors also had protested against the exclusion of the Jewish aldermen from the Municipal Council.
