Jewish and non-Jewish veterans of the last war and clergymen of all faiths joined yesterday in paying tribute to Haym Salomon, Jewish hero of the American Revolution, on the occasion of “Haym Salomon Day” which was observed in schools, churches, synagogues and by civic organizations here. The observances, which were proclaimed by Mayor Edward Kelly of Chicago in accordance with a resolution adopted by the City Council, marked the 158th anniversary of the death of Salomon.
At noon the commander of the Cook County American Legion placed a wreath at the foot of the Salomon-Washington-Morris monument which was erected in down-town Chicago last year. After a bugler blow taps, the Rev. Jay H. Brown, chaplain of the City Council, recited a dedicatory prayer. Participating in the ceremonies was Barnet Hades, co-chairman of the Patriotic Foundation of Chicago, which was instrumental in having the monument erected.
