Convinced that the Arabs in Palestine can no longer pin their hopes on a possible Axis invasion of the Near East, the Arab press today launched a campaign to secure British support for “complete Arab independence” in Palestine.
Articles published in Arab newspapers today indicate that they expect the British Government to give Palestine the same political status as that enjoyed by Iraq, Egypt and Transjordan which are governed by Arab rulers.
“The Arabs want a practical demonstration of Britain’s sympathy,” the newspaper Falastin writes. “They want to feel that they will be independent. They appreciate what Britain has done to help Iraq attain its independence and also what has been achieved by Egypt and Transjordan. They also await complete independence for Syria and Lebanon.”
The Adifaa, another Arab newspaper, says that Britain could render “the most valuable service” to the Pan-Arab movement by minimizing the difference in the standards of political development between Iraq and Palestine.
Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, has left for Turkey, it was disclosed here today. Learning of Kaplan’s departure, the Agudas Israel, extreme orthodox organization which is not affiliated with the Zionist movement, decided to send Rabbi Blau, one of its leaders, to Turkey, “without delay.”
