American Jewish war and post-war problems will be discussed by representatives from Jewish federations, welfare funds and community councils throughout the United States and Canada at the eleventh annual General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds which will take place at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, February 4-7, it was announced today by Sidney Hollander, president of the Council.
The general session of the Assembly will open with a discussion of post-war planning. Prominent leaders will deal with both the overseas and American aspects of this many-faceted question. Other subjects for discussion at the Assembly sessions will be (1) war and post-war problems of functional agencies; (2) Jewish community organization; (3) civic-protective programs in local communities; (4) financing and budgeting.
“The 1944 General Assembly comes at a decisive period for American Jewish community organizations,” declared Mr. Hollander. “In the local scene, new factors are at work as a result of war conditions. Welfare agencies are answering new demands. The structure of joint fund raising is being expanded. Anti-Semitism has not decreased and thoughtful American Jews are seeking more adequate machinery for the purpose of civic protection. Also up for consideration is the provocative question of the nature of the post-war Jewish community and its needs. The tide of war has definitely turned in favor of the United Nations, and fascist oppression of Europe’s minority peoples is on the rout. Long-term planning of relief and rehabilitation is now foremost in the minds of American Jews. These problems are all high up on the agenda of the American Jewish community. Accordingly, they will lead the agenda of the General Assembly.”
The Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds is an advisory and cooperative body set up by 243 member agencies in 210 cities in the United States and Canada.
