The American Jewish Congress today announced a decision of its administrative committee to launch a fund-raising campaign for $1,500,000 for the World Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Congress.
"The funds will be used in fighting domestic fascism and all forms of anti-Jewish discrimination at home, and in expanding rescue activities and post-war Jewish rehabilitation abroad," the announcement said.
It also stated that an all-day session of the administrative committee of the American Jewish Congress unanimously voted to continue the organization’s support of the American Jewish Conference, urging that its influence be extended and its scope broadened," so that it may become the authoritative body representing the Jews of America for the purpose of dealing with the common problem of Jews both at home and abroad."
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, speaking on the recommendation to have the scope of the American Jewish Conference extended, told the session that shortly before Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939 he had informed the General Jewish Council that the American Jewish Congress was prepared, if other organizations would follow suit, to merge itself into an all-inclusive and united representative body of American Jewry. "The Congress," Rabbi Wise added, "still maintains the same attitude and is prepared to make the American Jewish Conference the truly representative and authoritative spokesman of American Jewry."
