Mass-arrests of Hungarians charged with shielding Jews and their property are reported today from Hungary in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zuricher Zeitung.
Among those seized are many members of prominent Hungarian families. Countess Constanca Lubiensky, who was arrested last week on the charge of trying to save a Jewish girl-friend from the Budapest police, was sentenced to six months imprisonment to be followed by internment in a camp, the paper reports.
As the Russian Army advances closer to the Hungarian frontier, more and more Hungarians are displaying interest in the fate of the persecuted Jews in various parts of the country, and are trying to extend all possible assistance to them, the Swiss newspaper states. In one town 96 persons have been arrested during the last few days for giving such aid.
In Szombathely 21 persons were arrested for hiding Jewish property. Twenty persons were arrested in Gyoer for the same “crime.” In Kosice the Hungarian authorities arrested a prominent Hungarian merchant, Emil Siklossy, charging him with acting as a ” straw-man” for a Jewish wine dealer and with failure to inform the police of the wine stock valued at 300,000 pengoes which the authorities claim is ” Jewish property.”
