After discussing problems of the Near East and their impact on the lives of every American, the national seminar on Palestine, conducted by the American Christian Palestine Committee, which concluded here yesterday, set up an educational program of Christian action in behalf of Jewish aims in Palestine to be put in force during the coming year. Participants heard many distinguished authorities in the field from both the secular and religious world.
Dr. Henry A. Atkinson, co-chairman of the Council Against Intolerance, and national chairman of the Church Peace Union, in the keynote address which marked the opening of the first session, outlined “The Issues At Stake” as “how to get Great Britain to live up to her mandate and pay attention to the fact that this mandate was given her for the purpose of certain act being performed, that act which was designed to facilitate the establishment of a national homeland for the Jews in Palestine.”
David Ben-Gurion, chairman of the executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, Stated “that if the British government really intends now to maintain and enforce the White Paper, it will have to use constant and brutal force to do so.” Dr. Walter Clay Lowdermilk, U.S. Department of Agriculture authority, who spent eight months in 1939 in a study of Palestine’s soil, said that modern Palestine has but 1,500,000 population, though it is capable of supporting many more millions. “Located as it is at the cross-roads of three continents, Dr. Lowdermilk declared,” Palestine is rapidly becoming a commercial center for the whole Near East.”
