Sen. Robert, F. Wagner of New York, in an address prepared for delivery tonight on a national network, charged the British Government with being “faithless” to its promise regarding Palestine. He warned Britain that continuation of her present policies would cause her to suffer and urged the British Government “immediately to take all necessary steps, so that Palestine may be the kind of Jewish homeland which the Jews have worked and sacrificed to make it.”
Declaring that this is an American as well as a British obligation, Wagner recalled the Congressional resolution favoring establishment of a Jewish commonwealth in Palestine, and called on Congress to adopt another resolution “stronger and more positive than the first.” He further expressed his belief “that we should make every feasible representation to the British Government in exactly that same direction.”
Wagner called for “the maximum of justice for the Jews,” emphasizing that with the coming of the war “they-threw all their strength and all their nerve into the fight against fascism.” He declared that Palestine is the core of the whole question of justice toward the Jew,” and stressed that “our whole American history would be betrayed, if we did not range ourselves on the side of liberty and freedom which Palestine represents.”
