Israel will oppose the admission of Germany to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Maurice Fischer, head of the Israel delegation to the UNESCO meeting now in progress here, declared today.
Speaking during a debate in the organization, Mr. Fischer stressed that the cultural organization had no means to carry out education and reeducation in Germany. “Are there elements in Germany who could be entrusted with the task of reeducations” he asked.
He added that information which the Israel delegation had received from Germany proved that the Nazi spirit was still alive and that its underground agents had even succeeded in sneaking into the denazification program. Under these conditions, he continued, the Germans could not be entrusted with the composition of a national committee to further the ideals of UNESCO. Finally, Mr. Fischer suggested waiting until the time when the Germans have given sufficient proof of their good will. Mean-while, he proposed that the matter be sent to the U.N. for further discussion.
