The Israel Parliament today began its discussion of Premier David Ben Gurion’s proposal to fix the term of office of the present Parliament at four years and order the holding of the next general election in 1953.
A representative of the General Zionist Party, which increased its strength considerably in yesterday’s municipal elections demanded the dissolution of the present Knesset and the immediate holding of new national ballotting. In this proposal he was supported by the Mapam and Herut Parties, both of which suffered heavy losses in this election.
In Tel Aviv Dr. Peretz Bernstein, General Zionist leader, commenting on the election results, also demanded an immediate general election. “The present Parliament cannot go on in view of yesterday’s election result,” he insisted.
