The question of whether the reports of the alleged intention of Premier David Ben Gurion to take a prolonged leave of absence are true continued today to be a matter of speculation, even after a meeting which took place between the Premier and the four General Zionist members of the Cabinet.
General Zionist circles yesterday indicated that their Cabinet members would press Mr. Ben Gurion for a confirmation or denial of the reports. Today it became known that this did not happen. The General Zionist members of the Cabinet discussed with the Premier only general questions concerning the state, but not his personal intentions. They sought to clarify his stand on the liberalization of foreign currency regulations, the easing of the military governorship in Arab areas and other domestic issues.
The Haboker, organ of the General Zionists, today reports that Mrs. Ben Gurion indicated to a journalist that her husband “has decided to quit the government, but not his party.” Among the speculative opinions as to why Mr. Ben Gurion should seek retirement is one alleging that there are serious differences between him and other leaders of his party – the Israel Labor Party.
