President Joao Cafe Filho of Brazil, receiving Rio de Janeiro Chief Rabbi Jacob Fink, expressed through him a message of greeting to the Jewish community of this country on the occasion of the High Holy Days.
Similar messages have been addressed to the Jewish community by other Brazilian leaders, including Juscelino Kubitschek, a Presidential candidate, who assured the community of his sincere friendship. Euripides Cardoso de Menezes, president of the Catholic Confederation of Brazil and a deputy in the Parliament, introduced a motion in Parliament yesterday expressing that body’s “appreciation and gratitude to the Jewish people.” The motion provides that these sentiments be included in a New Year’s message sent to the Confederation of Brazilian Jewish Societies.
