Three American educators will speak at the ceremony marking the inauguration of the new campus of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem this Sunday, it was announced here today by Daniel G. Ross, president of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. They are: Dr. Selman A. Waksman of Rutgers University, Nobel prize-winning scientist; Dr. Buell G. Gallagher, president of the City College of New York; and Dr. Joseph Kaplan, physicist and rocket expert of the University of California at Los Angeles, who is chairman of the U.S. National Committee for the International Geophysical Year.
The inaugural ceremony, marking the formal opening of 21 new buildings erected on the University’s new campus at Glvat Ram, Jerusalem, will include the dedication of the University’s George and Florence Wise Auditorium, donated by Dr. George S. Wise, the American chairman of the University’s international Board of Governors who is now a resident of Mexico.
Mr. Ross disclosed that ten of the new buildings on the campus, erected at a cost of over $2, 000, 000, had been built with the aid of U. S. organizational and private benefactors. They Include the Abraham Mazer Building for the Institute of Jewish Studies, donated by the Mazer Family of New York; the Israel Goldstein Synagogue, a chapel contributed by friends of the New York rabbi; the Eliezer Kaplan School of Economics and Social Sciences, donated by the American Friends of Israel; the Los Angeles Building which houses the University’s Departments of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, donated by Southern California friends; the Glosser Physics Building; two student dormitories given by the Women’s League for Israel; and the Effie Hirsch Hostel, donated by Max Hirsch of Cincinnati.
Other new structures are being built including those which will house the University’s three schools of healing. A medical campus is being completed rapidly. This is the site of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School being constructed with funds contributed by Hadassah, and the American Jewish Physicians’ Committee, medical section of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. Alpha Omega, U.S. Dental Fraternity, has raised funds for the University’s new Dental School. A million dollar campaign, for the University’s new School of Pharmacy, is being conducted throughout the pharmaceutical profession.
