Major Jewish organizations today sent a joint telegram to the members of the United States Senate Subcommittee on Education supporting the stand taken by President Kennedy that consideration of legislation for Federal aid to public primary and secondary schools should not be hampered by intrusion of the question of loans to parochial schools.
The organizations which signed the telegram backing President Kennedy are: Union of American Hebrew Congregations, United Synagogue of America, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Central Conference of American Rabbis, Rabbinical Assembly of America, Rabbinical Council of America, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans of the United States and the American Jewish Congress.
Rabbi Balfour Brickner, appearing this weekend on behalf of the American Jewish Congress before a Senate subcommittee conducting hearings on the Federal aid-to-education bill, said that the use of government funds for church-supported schools would violate the traditional American separation of church and state. He warned against the view that long-term, low interest loans to parochial schools did not constitute government aid.
