The five-day annual convention of the American Conference of Cantors opened here today with cantors serving congregations of Orthodox, conservative and reform affiliation participating. The program includes performances of new music for the synagogue and a series of workshops on topics ranging from Ritual and Worship, to New Developments in Vocal Pedagogy.
The ACC, organized in 1953, works in close cooperation with the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music, in New York, which trains cantors for pulpits throughout the United States and Canada. The Conference, of which Cantor Arthur M. Wolfs on of Temple Emanu-El, New York City, is president, encourages the preservation of Jewish music as an integral part of the cantorial heritage; the recognition of the cantor’s role in American Jewish life; and encourages young men to enter the cancerate.
