Funeral services were held here today for Dr. Samuel Soloveichik, associate professor of chemistry at Yeshiva University and an authority on the history of chemistry, who died at Montefiore Hospital Saturday at the age of 58. Last year, Dr. Soloveichik proposed the first classification of aliphatic organic compounds which provide organic chemists with a research tool similar to the periodic table developed in the 19th century.
Born in Poland to a renowned family of rabbinic scholars, Dr. Soloveichik emigrated to the United States in 1939 and served with various Government organizations during the Second World War. He joined the faculty of Yeshiva University in 1953 and had been associate professor since 1959. Among Dr. Soloveichik’s survivors are two brothers –Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik, recognized authority on Jewish religious law, and Rabbi Aaron Soloveichik, dean of the Hebrew Theological College in Chicago.
