A Swiss doctor who wrote an allegedly anti-Semitic book that has been banned by local authorities was sentenced to one month in jail by a court in Vevey today. The accused is Dr. James Albert Mathez, a former radiologist, whose book “The Past, The Present and The Jewish Question,” was branded by the public prosecutor as “a collection of insults and incitements to crime.” The prosecutor had demanded an eight-month sentence.

The conviction of Dr. Mathez followed civil action brought by the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities last year which resulted in a court decision to destroy his book. An accomplice of Dr. Mathez was acquitted but the prosecutor has appealed that decision.
