Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R.,Me.) has complained to the New York Times against the use of her name in an anti-Israel advertisement placed in the Times Tuesday by Alfred M. Lilienthal, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was informed today. An aide to Sen. Smith told the JTA that she was not given prior notice that her name would appear nor did she give consent for the use of her name.
Sen. Smith was one of 14 Senators cited by Lilienthal for “courage and foresight” in voting against the Jackson amendment to last year’s military sales act providing $500 million in military credits for Israel. The aide said her vote against the Jackson amendment was a vote on procedure, not on the issue of aid to Israel. Sen. Smith has always voted for aid to Israel, he said.
