Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Day will be marked in the Washington area Sunday, April 9, with a meeting at Temple Israel in nearby Silver Springs, Maryland.

A proclamation issued by the president of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington, Dr. Harvey H. Ammerman, recalled the uprising that began on April 18,1943 against the Nazi forces and called “upon all Jews, and all men of good will, to recognize this day as a fitting tribute to the act of faith” of the ghetto martyrs, and in honor of the six million Jews who “were exterminated by the Nazis.”

Ammerman also said that the day will be “fitting to remember our suffering fellow Jews” in the Soviet Union and “resolve to make every effort to bring about their liberation from cultural and religious oppression, and freedom for them to emigrate to Israel.”
