Police are investigating an arson attempt last night at the home of Tel Aviv’s Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren. The fire was spotted by neighbors who extinguished it before any damage was done. Rabbi Goren and his family were out at the time. The fire was started by two plastic fuel containers set against the door of the house. The door was slightly scorched.

Rabbi Goren said he had received no threats but assumed the arson was the work of religious zealots opposed to his candidacy for the post of Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Goren was formerly the chief chaplain of Israel’s armed forces and is regarded as a moderate in the Orthodox religious establishment.
