Meir Rosenne, the legal adviser of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, has returned from Oslo and will report to the Foreign Ministry and to Premier Golda Meir on his efforts in the Norwegian capital. Rosenne returned without being able to see and talk to the two Israelis detained at the home of the Israeli security officer in Oslo, Yigal Eyal. Two well known Norwegian lawyers were assigned to defend them and deal with their case.
Meanwhile it was learned that the Norwegian authorities have hinted to Israel to recall Eyal. The Norwegians apparently are reluctant to declare Eyal persona non grata and asked that Israel recall him on her own accord. Israel, however, is not prepared to do it. It rejected the Norwegian hint.
Israeli political circles have explained that should Israel recall Eyal it would be tantamount to a partial – even if indirect – admission of Eyal’s implication in the murder of Ahmed Boushicki. Israel is firm in her position that Eyal is still on his post in Oslo. It seems that both Israel and Norway are making efforts to prevent diplomatic strains.
