After months of public declarations and private uncertainly open borders between Israel and Egypt are on the verge of becoming a reality. As a result of Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan’s visit to Egypt this week, the two governments have agreed that unlimited travel between the countries can begin forthwith. According to Egyptian Premier Mustapha Khalil, the two-way traffic can be expected to start by air or sea in “less than a month or two.”

“Flying or sailing” are key words, because the two sides have agreed to open only air and sea links at this stage. The land border will remain closed until the end of the Israeli interim evacuation of Sinai, in eight months. ( By David Landau)
