Activists temporarily retake settlement

More than 2,000 settler activists marched to an evacuated West Bank settlement, but most later
left of their own accord. Many camped there overnight
into Tuesday and vowed to rebuild Homesh, which was evacuated in August 2005 as part of Israel’s
unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the northern West Bank.

Organizers, many of them
upset with the mainstream settler leadership’s handling of the withdrawal, said
the march was the start of a new campaign not only to
retake Homesh, but also to counter future evacuations. The few hundred activists who remained at the site Tuesday were expected to be evacuated by
police and soldiers if necessary.
