After several days respite the anti-Semitic nationalists have reorganized their forces sufficiently to stage a number of menacing anti-Jewish demonstrations in various parts of Berlin.
Kurfurstendam, Steinplatz and other thoroughfares in West Berlin were the scenes last night of hostile demonstrations in which the cry “kill the Jews” was incessently raised. Order was restored with great difficulty,
On Tuesday night a grave anti-Jewish demonstration took place at Wilhelmplatz in Charlottenburg in connection with the meeting of the prohibited anti-Semitic Deutscherold Organization. Deputy Wulle, nationalist anti-Semitic leader, who is understood to have been proposed as the chief of police of Berlin in the event of the success of the Hitler putsch, was the principal speaker. The inflamatory speeches inciting the mob to violence against the Jews, were interrupted by songs having as their refrain “Down with the Government, kill the Jews”. Jewish residents of this section barricaded their houses and none dare appear on the streets before the police reenforcements arrived and dispersed the demonstration.
In view of the apparent ease with which these demonstrations can he organized in the face of the proscriptions against assemblies, Jews of Berlin fear a repetition of the pogroms of last week. The police are acting as energetically as possible, proceeding against notorious nationalist ringleaders wherever they can. The Deutsches Tageblatt, organ of Deputy Wulle, was suppressed, charged with inciting the Redohswehr to insubordination.
The socialists of Berlin have started a widespread movement to counter the anti-Semitic general agitation,. A mass meeting was called last night where addresses were delivered by deputies Hildenbrand, Kuenstler and Hoffman. The pogrom and pogrom agitations were denounced as damaging to Germany’s reputation in the world. The speakers maintained that the Jews had done their duty during the war, pointing out that the first German soldier to be killed was the Jewish deputy Dr. Frank. Socialists proceeded to point out that the present anti-Semitic campaign was intended to divert the public’s attention from those actually responsible for Germany’s defeat and to destroy the Republic. To preserve the Democracy it is essential to unite and smash the reactionary anti-Semitism, the socialist speakers urged.
With Berlin itself in the throes of pogrom panic, reports from other parts of Germany are equally disquieting. At Wolfenbeutel, near Hanover, serious anti-Jewish excesses took place in the course of which Jewish houses were bombed and windows smashed.
At Badhomburg, the Jewish cemetery was invaded by nationalist hooligans who defiled the graves and smashed sixty gravestones.
