Representatives of the various Jewish public and national institutions were present at the opening session of the conference of the Gdud Meginei Hasafah, “Legion of Defenders of the Language”, held here this week.
David Yellin, representing the Jewish National Council and the Vaad Halashon (Language Board); Mordecai ben Hillel ha-Cohen, representing the Authors’ Association; M. M. Ussishkin, Dr. Isaac Epstein and Chaim Nachman Bialik addressed the sessions.
Measures to spread the Hebrew language both in Palestine and in the Diaspora were decided upon.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
More than 500 Young Judaeans in 75 cities of 34 states have entered the National Oratorical Contest of Young Judaea. The finals will take place at the Zionist and Young Judaca National Conventions in Atlantic City the end of June. The winners in the twelve regional contests, will compete for two prizes, the first being a free round trip to Palestine offered by E. Rosen of the Palestine and Oriental Touring Company, and the second $100 in cash or in Palestine Securities.
The first of the regional contests is to be held on May 22, at New Haven, for the Coanecticut contestants. On June 2, the Western Pennsylvania. Ohio and Detroit contestants will meet in Pittsburgh. The two New York regions, Brooklyn and Manhattan and the Bronx, will hold their contests on June 5th. One June 12th contests will be held in the following regions: New Jersey, with Newark as centre; Upper New York State, with Rochester as centre; Eastern Pennsylvania, with Philadelphia as centre; Southern Interstate region, with Chattanooga, Tenn., as centre. The New England contest will be held on June 17th, at Portland, Maine. The Chicago, Baltimore and Des Moines centres will hold their contests early in June.
Contributions totalling $834,050 have been received thus far toward the $1,500,000 fund being sought by the 92nd Street Y. M. H. A.
Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the Y. M. H. A., announced that he had received a check for $5,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Sol M. Stroock toward the fund. Mr. Stroock was Judge Proskauer’s predecessor as president of the Y. M. H. A., and is now the president of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies.
The annual report of the Jewish Board of Guardians and the twentieth report of its predecessor, the Jewish Protectory and Aid Society, Hawthorne, N. Y., shows that the expenditures last year were $351,448. There was a deficit of $4,326 toward which donations of $2,500 have been received.
The organization has a department for prevention of crime and after-care of delinquents and maintains, among other activities, medical, psychological, psychiatric and endocrine clinics. Nearly 1,000 boys and 528 girls were under supervision during the year. There were 16,710 case contacts, 6,329 of which were visits to homes.
