The Philadelphia Jewish community inaugurated its drive for $400,000 for the United Palestine Appeal by contributing the sum of $150,000 in less than one hour.
The occasion was the banquet at the Hotel Benjamin Franklin Sunday night. Fifteen hundred men and women were present.
One hundred teams under the leadership of Sol C. Kraus and Mrs. Max L. Margolis will carry on the campaign which will last ten days.
Judge Julian W. Mack, the guest of honor; and Judge William M. Lewis, National Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, were the speakers. Sol C. Kraus, Chairman of the drive, presided.
The backward position of the non-Zionists at this stage of the Palestine undertaking was deplored by Judge Mack in his address. “I regret that there are not among those present many of my old Philadelphia friends, many of whom are non-Zionists.”
The largest contribution was $12,000 made by the Brith Achim Lodge. Five thousand dollars was contributed by Albert M. Greenfield. The rest of the $150,000 was raised in sums of $3,000 and less.
