More than 500 delegates, representing every section in the country, were present at the opening of the thirteenth annual convention of the Hadassah Women’s Zionist Organization yesterday morning. Mrs. Irma Lindheim, national president, in submitting her report to the convention, at the opening session. pointed out that Hadassah’s “steady growth in every department of work and the trend of its development along organization lines during the last year demonstrate how capable it has been of adhering to its autonomy in America and maintaining its specific purpose in Palestine at the same time that it has strengthened its position in the world of Zionist affairs.”
The report stated that American women raised three quarters of a million dollars for Palestine through Hadassah, the women’s Zionist Organization of America, for the year ending June 1, according to a report of the National Board presented today by Mrs. Irma L. Lindheim, national president, at the opening session of the thirteenth annual convention of the organization at the Ritz Carlton Hotel here.
More than $500,000 was for medical and health work which Hadassah conducts in Palestine and for new hospital buildings. The rest, raised through the United Palestine Appeal, was for general Zionist undertakings. In addition, the Hadassah members sent linens and garments valued at more than $60,000 to Palestine for twenty-five institutions.
The total number of chapters represented at the convention is 270, or 24 more than at the last convention, according to the annual report. The membership of these chapters is 34,000, which is 6,000 more than last year. The work of Hadassah is spread over 37 States in the Union.
The Hadassah delegates were welcomed at the opening session by Mrs. Samuel Green, president of the Atlantic City Chapter. Reports were submitted by the treasurer, Mrs. Dorothy E. Lefkowitz, showing that Hadassah raised for all its purposes during the fiscal year ending June 1 the total of $696,498. Since 1922, when the organization became autonomous, Hadassah raised $2,017,037.
Miss Stella Berman, national president of Junior Hadassah, reported the existence of 206 units and groups, showing an increase of 65 over last year. The total membership is 8,326, or 1,300 more than last year.
Mr. Louis Lipsky, president of the Zionist Organization of America, greeted the convention.
As a preliminary to the convention a conference was held yesterday by officers of regional units to discuss plans for further organization of units throughout the country. Mrs. Anna Moscowitz Kross, of New York, presided at this meeting.
The convention session will close Saturday night.
