Hundreds of delegates from Y. M. H. A.’s, Y. W. H. A.’s and Jewish community centers are attending the three conventions of the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. Federations being held over the Labor Day week end, according to an announcement from the Jewish Welfare Board in New York.
In New England, the Associated Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. are meeting in Portland, Me. On the program are the Governor of Maine, Hon. Ralph O. Brewster; Dr. Augustus, Commissioner of Education in the State of Maine; Hon. Albert Hurwitz, president of the Associated Y. M. and Y. W. H. A.’s of New England; Louis E. Kirstein of the Executive Council of the Jewish Welfare Board; and Dr. Maurice B. Hexter, Executive Director of the Federated Jewish Charities of Boston.
There will be a discussion on “The Program of the Jewish Center,” opening with an address by Rabbi Aaron G. Robinson Executive Director of the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. of Newark, N. J. Benjamin Rabinowitz, the Jewish Welfare Board’s field secretary for New England, will report on the work of the Board in that territory.
Allentown, Pa., is acting as host to the convention of the Pennsylvania Federation of Y. M. and Y. W. H. A.’s.
The Middle Atlantic States Federation of the Y. M. H. A.’s and Kindred Associations are meeting at Richmond, Va. An address will be delivered by Attorney General Saunders of Virginia, Samuel Leff, field secretary of the Jewish Welfare Board, will discuss “Essentials of Sound Y. M. H. A.’s and Y. W. H. A.’s
For the observance of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashonah, and the Day of Atonement, on September 15, 16 and 24, the Jewish Welfare Board has issued a bulletin containing questions and answers relating to the High Holy Days; a list of subjects for essays, sermons, and addresses; directions for conducting religious services for young people; selected references; quotations in prose and verse and an outline of the main facts concerning the significance and observance of Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur.
Continuation classes for girls who have graduated from a Talmud Torah or from some other qualified school will be conducted by the Women’s Branch of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Mrs. Herbert S. Goldstein, president of the Women’s Branch, announced.
The classes will meet in the evening at the Community House of the Ohab Zedek Synagogue, West 95th Street near Columbus Avenue, New York City.
The program of studies is being arranged by the National Board of Jewish Education of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America of which Dr. Moses Seldal, Supervisor of the Board of Jewish Education of Baltimore, is the Chairman.
As the number of pupils increases it is planned to open classes in other parts of New York.
